It’s always hard to estimate a time for getting through Dark Souls and its expansions, given how many people will spend hours stuck on the same section, but an experienced (and lucky) player could probably breeze through the basics in two or three hours. The new variant of the Smelter Demon is certainly very difficult, but it’s not a very interesting challenge – especially considering the boss battles used to be the highlight of the series.
However, the two expansions do have opposing priorities and while Sunken King concentrated on its new interactive scenery Old Iron King is much more focused on close-up melee combat.Īnd in amongst the repetition there are some interesting new enemies this time: fire giants that drip lava from their arms, disgusting explosive creatures that crawl along the floor, enemies that recombine even when you’ve chopped them limb from limb, and a particularly dangerous ghoul with a flaming whip and a bow and arrow. This expansion is certainly not as visually distinct as last month’s Crown Of The Sunken King. It’s not, however, a particularly attractive piece piece of architecture and the blurry landscape viewed from the ledges is almost laughably ugly. It’s all designed with From’s usual eye for gaming masochism, with cleverly interconnecting routes that are loaded with traps and horribly powerful monsters. The new area is called Brume Tower: a mix of narrow corridors, wide open courtyards, and precariously narrow ledges.
